Themis Klarides broke new ground in 2015 when she was elected as the first female Republican leader in the Connecticut House of Representatives.

For the last four years she has been leading the charge in the Democrat-dominated state for fiscal restraint, regulatory reform, job creation and tax relief.

Winning respect as a Republican can be difficult in the Constitution State, but challenging expectations has been a lifelong habit for Klarides. A former model and WWF ring girl, after graduating from Quinnipiac Law School she studied for her bar exam backstage during tapings of Monday Night Raw.

When she first ran for her seat in the late nineties, her opponents tried to use her past as a swimsuit model against her. Her straight-talking, no nonsense style won the day, and has kept her in office ever since.

“I kind of say what I think,” she said in a recent podcast. “Sometimes that’s rough, but I think that’s where I built my reputation of being a straight talker—without being offensive to people. People don’t want to hear the mumbo jumbo anymore. They don’t want to hear the stump speech. They want to know why they should believe in you.”

Earlier this year she nearly threw her hat into the ring for governor. Despite pressure from her supporters to run, and weeks of speculation, she eventually decided not to enter the fray for the top spot.

“This is not a decision that I made without staying up at night. Of course, I talked to my family. Of course, I talked to my friends. Of course, I pray over it,” she said during a press conference in Hartford. “I believe me staying in the House, getting a majority, and being Speaker of the House should be the direction I will go in.”

Republicans did not make the gains in the House Klarides had hoped for, but there were impressive GOP showings in two statewide races. Both Bob Stefanowski and Sue Hatfield came much closer to winning the gubernatorial and attorney general races than expected, drawing out the count well into a second day before the results were declared.

Could we see a Themis Klarides 2022 campaign in the next gubernatorial cycle? Don’t count her out. In the meantime, you’ll find her preparing for another legislative session in Hartford, where she stands out not just because of her negotiating skill and political instincts, but because of her finely tuned fashion sense as well. Here are a few of our favorite looks!

Oh how we love when politicians pull off colorful outfits! Those dark suits are classy, but make it too easy to blend into the background. The Connecticut-native played with three shades that perfectly complement one another: a pair of black pants, a white shirt and a beautiful pink jacket. Even better are the well-chosen accessories. You know what they say, jewelry is a girl’s best friend!

Stylish and casual

This ensemble checks every single box style-wise, proving that politicians can work relaxed looks with a strong fashionable touch. The first thing we noticed is the pop of color, thanks to the coral knit sweater. This pinkish orange shade was recently voted the most popular for 2019, so you can officially start shopping! The pants and sneakers combo makes Themis Klarides so relatable to chic girls, working moms, and busy ladies (who all vote, of course!).

Matching in pink

This politician sure knows how to leave a strong impression. Themis teamed up with her sister and fellow Connecticut House member Ditria for a display of matching magenta dresses during the 2018 session. The length, the shoes and even the trendy frills on the sleeves make this outfit stand out!

If you have that basic black dress and you don’t know how to make stand out, here’s an example you can follow. The House Minority Leader donned a simple short-sleeved black number, but made it special with a hint of burgundy. Klarides flaunted a pair of very stylish over-the-knee boots, the detail that actually makes the whole look so on point. Yes, burgundy and black are so chic together!

As she so often does, Klarides has put together an outfit that is stylish and fun, but dignified enough for any occasion. Those red pants deserve an award! The simple white shirt finishes off the look.
