If you follow Ukrainian politics you probably know who Olena Sotnyk is. If you don’t follow Ukrainian politics then hopefully by the time you’ve read this you’ll want to.

With both Russia and the West vying for influence in the vast Eastern European state, few countries are as important to international stability right now as Ukraine.

2019 is set to be a crucial year in Ukrainian politics. Presidential elections are slated for March 31st, and and parliamentarian elections must be held by October. These will be the first since Russian-backed separatists took control in three parts of the country  – Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk – so tensions are running high.

Sotnyk, an attorney by trade, sits in the Rada as a member of Sampovich (or “Self-reliance”). The party is firmly pro-European, and sits squarely in the tradition of European Christian democracy. Despite only having 25 seats out of the total 450 in the Rada, the fractured nature of Ukranian politics means Sampovich is still an important player. The party is the second largest in the 150-member opposition.

The charismatic Olena Sotnyk takes a leading role in Ukrainian relations with the rest of Europe. She is secretary of the Committee on European Integration, which oversees the harmonization of Ukrainian and EU law. She is also part of the Permanent Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The young parliamentarian is an important thought-leader among Western-oriented Ukrainians, but we think she is a fashion-leader as well! Here are some of our favorite style moments:

Girls can do anything

Not ever politician would dare to wear denim. When she’s not breaking down boundaries in the Ukrainian parliament, Sotnyk is more than ready to take over Rome. This is the perfect proof that a good pair of jeans matched with the ideal T-shirt can be such a major fashion score.

Forget about leopard or snakeskin, this season there is one print to rule them all! Plaid is the pattern you’ll be seeing everywhere. Sotnyk decided to play with one of the most popular colors of the season – light grey. The best thing about the outfit is that it actually features pieces most of us own at home (which makes it easy to steal her ideas!). A turtleneck and scarf are essentials for every single winter. The fun hints of peach hues in the coat give it a joyful look on a bleak day.

Classy has a new name

Wearing white from head to toe is an unconventional pick for cold winter days. While the rest of us get cozy in dark tones such as black and brown, Olena Sotnyk pulls off a major fashion surprise. There is really no wrong or right time to flaunt white. Sometimes fashion risks turn out to be a huge success.

Sophisticated power dressing

As a member of the Rada, Sotnyk tends to stick to a classic dress code but always adds her signature finishing touches. For a visit to the Parliament of Brussels, she’s opted for a very sophisticated all-red ensemble, and her accessory choices really stand out. While most women are under the impression that heels give them a boost of power, Sotnyk showed confidence by not being afraid to wear flats. She also included a chic black coat and a necklace to match the shoes.

Blue looks amazing on Olena

It’s important to know which color flatters you the most – for Sotnyk that certainly must be blue. This light shade is not often seen along the corridors of power in capital cities, but there are times when it feels amazing to choose a color that really stands out. Everyone wearing more or less the same thing is no fun at all, so hopefully more politicians will get the courage to follow Olena Sotnyk’s example!

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article stated that Olena Sotnyk and her husband Anatoliy Amelin had founded a beauty parlor. The business was in fact a real estate company and neither Sotnyk nor Amelin retain any interest in the company. We regret the error.
