Two recent events have emphasized the important role of fashion in American politics: the opening of a museum exhibition at Cornell University dedicated to the style choices of powerful women (WOMEN EMPOWERED: Fashions from the Frontline), and Nancy Pelosi exiting the White House wearing THAT COAT after totally owning President Trump during a televised Oval Office meeting.

Do check out the exhibition at Cornell (at least online) but it is the instantly-iconic image of Pelosi snapping on her shades, wearing THAT COAT, that has made the strongest impression this week (and, if we can humbly add, totally justified the existence of our weekly political fashion column – just sayin’).

Do we need to introduce Nancy Pelosi to our readers as we normally do in these introductory sections? She is either the embodiment of everything you think is wrong with Washington, or she represents the fulfilment of your dreams of Congressional oversight of the Trump presidency. Like her or loathe her, you cannot ignore her (especially as she is about to become the first female Speaker of the House FOR A SECOND TIME).

Even if you are an ardent Pelosi-detractor, however, you have to admire her keenly-defined sense of style and the way she uses it to exert political power and influence. Here are a few of our favorite moments from Pelosi’s greatest style hits – starting with the one that everyone is STILL talking about.

THE coat

Fashion is much more than clothing! Nancy Pelosi made headlines when she flaunted her fabulous Max Mara fiery orange-red coat while making a triumphant exit from a meeting with President Trump. The design has quickly become a synonym for female strength, confidence, attitude and authority.

The coat, which was last on sale in 2013, made such an impression that Max Mara have announced they will be bringing back the design in a full range of different colors. Don’t forget the sunglasses power-moment, though. She snapped them on like an action hero exiting a building just before it was about to explode, and the cameras captured the moment perfectly. This is how you do power dressing!

This is how you do white

No matter if she’s doing an interview or meeting a world leader, Pelosi has everything figured out to the last detail. An all-white suit is not always a common choice for politicians, but Nancy Pelosi is anything but common. Also fascinating are the added hints of purple: from the very intricate lavender blouse and chic necklace, to the bold pointed toe shoes. This is how you radiate power through fashion.

With this captivating monochrome ensemble, the incoming Speaker took two very simple pieces of clothing and made them look like a million dollars. It’s been done with very down-to-earth gray shades, both appropriate and perfect for any happening. Aside from her immaculate style choices, Pelosi’s hair and makeup are always on point, completing the final appearance.

Be different

Isn’t it refreshing to see a woman wearing whatever color she wants? It’s amazing that so many politicians always opt for sombre gray and black tones when attracting attention is a key part of their job. Nancy Pelosi’s bubblegum pink number is completely on trend and features a below-the-knee length, flattering for the whole range of body types. Pelosi wrapps it up the look with a pair of classic nude pumps.

Keep it pastel

Nancy Pelosi decided to get on board on another fashion trend with this number: pastels.  From mint green, to baby blue, these shades are so complimentary and will add that ultra-modern vibe to any outfit. Here Madam Speaker-elect got creative with several different tones, but the end result is still very much on trend.
