When Kirsten Gillibrand announced her formation of a presidential exploratory committee in January she found a particularly media-savvy vehicle to do it: a guest appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Knowing how to reach her target audience with her message is a hallmark of Gillibrand’s political career. A Democrat, she was first elected to Congress in 2006 in the traditionally Republican 20th House district in Upstate New York. To help woo reluctant voters her campaign received strong support from heavyweight politicians like Bill Clinton, and was tough on immigration, opposed to gun control, and funded in part by big tobacco.

Now a high-profile member of the US Senate and seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, Gillibrand has reversed many of her previous conservative-friendly positions. In 2017 she became the first high-profile Democrat to suggest her former benefactor Bill Clinton should have resigned in the 19902 because of his treatment of Monica Lewinsky. She also announced in her recent campaign video that she would no longer accept donations from corporate PACs.

But it is not just a nose for changing political fashions that Kirsten Gillibrand will need to stand out from the crowded field of Democratic contenders. Thankfully, she has a keen sense of sytle (and more than a touch of old-fashioned glamour) as well!

We will be seeing a lot from this high-profile Democratic candidate in the next year. Here are some of her best looks to give you an idea of what to expect.

Kirsten Gillibrand looks stunning in navy

Sure, black is a popular color, but have you tried navy? The gorgeous shade of blue is ideal for so many occasions (from a ladies’ night out to, as in this example, a photo shoot for Vogue). If Anna Wintour wants to feature you in her iconic magazine, it’s more than certain that your taste in fashion is top notch. Gillibrand stuck to her minimalist attire, and stunned in a two-piece navy suit. Instead of wearing pants and a button-up under the blazer, she opted for a gentler approach with a beautiful dress.

A day to remember

Not content with limiting her pop-culture cred to the pages of Vogue, Senator Gillibrand chose the Late Show with Stephen Colbert to announce her candidacy for president of the United States! And can you guess what her color of choice was for the big reveal? A very simple and beautiful navy dress that might soon become a synonym for power. If she does win, everyone will remember the day she announced the candidacy and the navy ensemble will be a part of history. Timeless, elegant, and with a hint of glamour.

When in doubt, choose black

We love seeing powerful ladies in their glamorous red carpet looks. Senator Gillibrand flaunted her figure in a long black gown for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala in September. The design features lace details on the shoulders, giving a ‘wow’ final touch to the outfit. Never one to wear distracting makeup or an over the top hairstyle, Gillibrand likes to keep things natural and shows that she feels comfortable in her own skin.

Keep up with the trends

Not many female politicians feel free to flaunt the latest trends, but Senator Gillibrand is an exception. At dinner with her friends, the Senator from New York ditched her high heels and went for a more casual version. Her beautiful dress is very much on trend at the moment, and we love that fact that she totally rocks those espadrilles. Powerful women don’t always need high heels to be strong.

Details matter

One of the most important rules in fashion is that accessories are the best way to stand out. No matter how boring your ensemble is, you can always upgrade it with jewelry, a broach, or a scarf. This time, it’s a pretty white sleeveless dress, elevated with a jewelry set in the loveliest turquoise color. Whenever you decide to flaunt a monochrome look, make sure to add a hint of color and you’ll be scoring high on the style scale.
