The office of Secretary of State is not generally considered one of the more glamorous roles in state-level politics – that is, until now. Please allow us to introduce Secretary of State-elect for Michigan, Jocelyn Benson!

This Democrat on the rise has an amazing back-story: a degree from Harvard Law School, a stint as an investigator for the Southern Poverty Law Center (where she now sits on the board), and two years leading RISE, which works with elite athletes to encourage wider voter participation.

And when it comes to being a Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson wrote the book. As in literally. Seriously. She wrote State Secretaries of State: Guardians of the Democratic Process, published in 2010.

Eight years later (during which time she also became the youngest women to ever lead a top 100 law school, Wayne State) she decided to become a Secretary of State herself – and she did! Elected earlier this month, she will assume office in January as the first Democrat in the Michigan SOS office for over twenty years.

Here’s what we want to know: has she written a book about Presidents? If she has, look out Washington!

Besides setting standards for protecting voting rights, Benson also sets standards for politicians who want to balance accessibility with a touch of glamour. Here are just some of our favorite fashion moments from her political career.

Gorgeous on monochrome

Wearing a monochrome ensemble can be a very risky choice. Things become even harder when you are a lady politician who loves following the latest trends while also looking classy. One way to do that is by choosing a color that is flattering and makes you stand out. The electric shade of blue that the Secretary of State-elect loves so much is very much on trend right now.

Benson has perfected power dressing up to the last detail, and is not afraid to use a color normally associated with the opposition. Red is the a very daring color, especially when you decide to match it with black. Styling options can be limited for politicians, so why not use all available colors? You can always follow Benson’s example and elevate a basic black suit with an eye-catching blazer.

Girl power

For understandable reasons, blue is still a primary fashion color for this Democrat. When she’s not delivering classy looks, Benson knows how to take things down a notch and dress up a pair of jeans. What we love the most about this look is the smile on her face. And why not smile when you’re posing with an A-list celeb like Alyssa Milano and your fellow Democrat, Governor-elect of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer?

Another top look in red

Here’s another look in red that is worth your attention. Benson here demonstrates that she knows exactly when to introduce a twist in her elegant looks – this red midi dress would have been so boring without the fabulous cutout detail in the neckline. Both hair and makeup are classy and appropriate for the event.

Yes, powerful women can wear floral ensembles! The short-sleeved black blazer, heels, and tights tone down the more playful nature of the dress, keeping things professional but still fun and feminine. Taken nearly a year ago, this pic shows Jocelyn Benson joined again by Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer. Do you think they were planning something?
